Owning the Dream: Designing the Rocket Classic Trophy for Detroit

When the Rocket Mortgage Classic launched in 2019, ROSSETTI was tapped to design a trophy that reflected the significance of Detroit’s first PGA Tour event. Following Rocket’s rebrand in 2024, the opportunity arose once again for ROSSETTI to reimagine the trophy for the 2025 tournament. Known globally for sports and entertainment design—and proudly rooted in Detroit—ROSSETTI approached the challenge with care and creativity, crafting a narrative of victory and celebration uniquely tied to the city.

The design journey began with a Discover Workshop in December 2024, where Rocket and ROSSETTI came together to align on the foundation driving the new brand and tournament identity: Prosperity, Optimism, Innovation, and Home. Graphic Design Lead Laura Bade led the effort, fully designing the trophy from concept to final form. Inspired by raw materials, industrial textures, and enduring geometry, she envisioned a piece that embodied Detroit’s strength and Rocket’s forward-looking spirit. To bring the design to life, ROSSETTI engaged Brian Madden, a sculptor known for transforming meaningful moments into lasting artifacts. Brian’s expertise in mark-making, material storytelling, and fabrication helped elevate the design into a powerful sculptural object, rooted in Detroit and rich in symbolism.

Crafted with regional materials, the trophy is deeply tied to Detroit’s identity. A limestone base anchors the form, symbolizing the city’s resilient foundation. As it rises, the design transitions from a square to a circular top, representing growth, unity, and ambition. Finishes such as gunmetal, graphite, chrome, and polished paint honor Detroit’s industrial and automotive heritage. The result is a piece that pays tribute to the city’s legacy and forward momentum.

When Aldrich Potgieter lifted the trophy after a thrilling five-hole playoff win this past weekend, the moment marked more than a personal triumph. It celebrated the tournament’s place in Detroit, Rocket’s renewed identity, and ROSSETTI’s ability to transform values into experience. The trophy now stands as a symbol of excellence on and off the course.
