Community Arena Sparks Urban Revival
ROSSETTI led public forums and presentations with government officials, businesses and neighbors to build consensus and shape a collective vision for a multi-use arena located in a previously disinvested area. ROSSETTI’s master plan centered on the area’s strong cultural heritage to create a civic distinction and downtown development that would enhance, but not overwhelm, the neighborhood. Since its completion, the 12,000-seat Van Andel Arena has driven more than half a billion dollars in private investment into downtown Grand Rapids. Originally built as an events arena, ROSSETTI renovated the horseshoe bowl to accommodate the city’s minor league hockey team, the Grand Rapids Griffins. A soaring glass façade welcomes the community into the building by bringing the outside in. It hosts crowds for multi-use events, year-round.
