Frankincense, myrrh, and melted vinyl. It’s the holiday season, and Detroiters are getting in the spirit by kickstarting a new tradition: a storefront retail decorating contest. Lawrence Technological University’s Detroit Center for Design and Technology is pairing local designers to shops in West Village, Corktown, Downtown, and Midtown for the first-ever Holiday Window Walk.

The new Detroit Pistons performance center will house a familiar name. The Pistons and Michigan-based grocer Plum Market announced in a press release Wednesday morning that the grocery chain will open a cafe and retail store in the Henry Ford-Detroit Pistons Performance Center under construction in the New Center area of Detroit, a short distance from Little Caesars Arena.

Faced with new competition on The Strip and the addition of a second NASCAR premier series race, Las Vegas Motor Speedway is making several improvements.  The track will upgrade its premium grandstand seating and create social, digitally wired areas for all ticketed fans. The venue, one of eight owned by Speedway Motorsports Inc., will announce the upgrades this week and expects the work to be done by the track’s spring race weekend.

The 21st century has seen some fairly significant advancements in arena design, but it’s come at a price. As arenas have expanded to accommodate luxury suites and high-end concourse attractions, the less expensive seats have moved so far away from the action that the fans feel detached from the in-game experience. But while it’s true that those seats typically generate the least amount of revenue, their importance should not be understated.
